Laver, and Laverbread

In South Wales, 'laver' is pronounced with a long 'A' – as in 'palaver'. But the same seaweed is also eaten in Devon and Cornwall, where (according to Wikipedia) it's pronounced as in the name of the former Australian tennis icon, Rod Laver.

Also according to Wikipedia, the actor Richard Burton was quoted as describing laverbread as "Welshman's caviar".

My Mum used to buy laverbread on Swansea market, and we'd have it fried for breakfast (with bacon, eggs, etc.). Lush!

Wikipedia also tells us that the Welsh name for laverbread is "bara lafwr or bara lawr". Lafwr would be pronounced 'la–voor', which makes it closer to the English word; lawr would approximately rhyme with the English word 'sour'.
